If you are new to the UK and would like to work or study here in the UK, you must have a National Insurance Number to do this, which is a reference which is unique to you, made of letters and numbers. All employers and universities in the UK will need you to have this when you apply for a job or a university place, so arrange to get your NI Number as soon as possible, ready for when you are asked for it at your job or university interview. Please note that this does not automatically mean that you will have to pay NI contributions, as this depends on your individual work or study circumstances.

Your NINO will look something like this: AB 12 34 56 C

If you have lost your NI card

If you already have a National Insurance number and you have lost it, you should click the “Need A Reminder Sent Out?” link above. Fill out the form, with details such as your full name, date of birth, current address, and previous address if have one. You will need to sign the form, so we will then either email or post out the form for you to sign. You will need to post it back to the address on the form, and then your ‘reminder’ letter will be issued and posted out to the address you have given, and will arrive with you by post, usually within 7 days

Starting work if you have not got an NI number yet

You can start to work for an employer before your National Insurance number arrives, if you can prove you have the right to work in the UK. You should tell your employer that you have applied for your number, and give it to them as soon as you receive it. Your employer will use the number when working out your wage or salary, and make sure you are paying the correct amount of NI through your pay, if any is due

If you have turned 16 and didn’t receive it by post

If you’re a UK National, you should have automatically been sent your NI Number just before your 16th birthday, if you were living in the UK at the time. Call the National Insurance number helpline if you didn’t get one and you are aged 16 or 17, and they will assist you on getting your number
